Last week we had a chance to see a wonderful performance by the Houston Symphony. The conductor shared with us how his songs tell a story without words. The symphony played various pieces to which the conductor shared the composer's story. He asked us to focus on how the different sounds reveal the story.
Share some of your thoughts based off what you learned. Remember he shared the cat and dog story, the galloping of horses, the taxi horns, etc. What was your favorite part? What did you think when he said the pieces followed the story arc? Explain. I apologize for the delay on this blog!

Dear Mr. Fleming,
I guess you could say I liked the symphony, but it was kind of long. My favorite song or piece of the symphony was "Oh Lois" for the 50th anniversary of the Supper Man comics. I also liked the story of the dog and the cat! The symphony was ok and I think I would like to go back again. What was the thing on the back of the conductors head?? :)
Sincerely,

Dear Mr.Fleming

Dear Mr.Fleming ,
The symphony was OK but its not the kind of music I like. The conductor was also hilarious. I thought most of music kind of sounded the same as the cat and the dog story (which is my favorite). I really don't want to go back it was to boring.WHAT WAS THE THING ON THE BACK OF THE CONDUCTORS HEAD????????.

I guess I would say I enjoyed the symphony. At some parts I was a little bored but for the most part I enjoyed it. "Oh Lois" was my favorite piece. I liked how the conductor would stop and talk to the audience and talk about being a auther. Also one of my favorite pieces was A American in Paris. I thought Cats and Dogs was a funny piece but I could not teel when the Cat and Dog were doing some thing. I except your appalagy.

Dear Mr. Fleming,
During the Houston Symphony, I really loved picturing something going on while the music played. I found it interesting to picture something happening as if you were right there in front of it watching. I think he meant it was like a story having all those little steps when he said it was like a story arc. I really wish he wouldn't have told us what to picture in our heads while they were playing becuase it would have been interesting to hear what everyone pictured in their heads. I hope we get an opportunity to go again 'cause I found it very interesting. I can't wait to hear your oppinoin on this. THANKS!!!
Sincerely,

Dear Mr.Fleming,
I think the symphony was a good experience for us to learn more about music. I loved the song abut Lois Lane. The instrument that appealed to me the most was the instrument that made a noise like a bat. The symphony was great but kind of boring in some parts. What was that spot on the back of the conductor`s head???
Sincerely,

dear Mr.Fleming
The symphony was not what I expeced. I thought there would be no talking. I thought it would Just be music (boring). I did not know they had a program. My favorite song was Walking In Paris. I liked that song because there was a lot of emotoin. Like the part were the horns honked. (Why did the conducter have a boled spot on his head?)

When I walked into the sympthony hall I knew it would be a great performance. Usually when I hear music I just here beutiful sounds, but for this music I could here beutiful sounds and imagen a story. I also I liked it becuase you could tell it was professional so it was a cooler experience then just watching a video. I'm really glad we went on to the symphony.

When I went to Jones Hall, I was really excited. My favorite peice was "Oh Lois" because it had those jiggly sounding things in it and a lot of action going on.The conductor was pretty nice....
I also like the dog and cat one.(It really sounded like a dog chasing a cat)
It was cool seeing the whole symphony playing at once.I can't wait to go there again!
Sincerely,

The symphony was actaully kind of fun. I thought they would just play music the whole time and it would be boring. My favorite song was the one about when the composer goes to Paris and it's really loud!I might even want to go back to the symphony again.

Dear Mr.fleming,
I liked the symphony very much. It was interesting and fun. I especially liked the part where the conductor explained the musics (he has funny). I liked the music of the storm because it hooks or appealed me the most. I would like to have a opportunity again to go back to the symphony!

Dear Mr.Fleming,
I actully really liked the symphony. It was interesting how the composer tied in writing to the music. I liked how he explained what was happening in the music, it was a lot easier to picture it in your mind. My favorite piece of music was "The American in Paris" It was very loud and exciting at the same time. I hope the future 5th graders will enjoy the symphony as much as I did.
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Fleming
I kind of liked the symphony. My favorite song though was probobly "Oh Lois". One thing that I would like to know is what was on the conductor's head.

Dear Mr. Fleming,
The symphony was okay, I guess. My favorite piece was "Oh Lois" just because it got loud and kept me from falling asleep.I think the symphony would be a little for enjoyable if he had asked less questions. One thing for sure was that the gray spot on the back of the conducter's head caught my attention.

Dear Mr. Fleming,
I'd give the symphony a 6 stars out of 10 stars since it was pretty long. I think I would have liked it more if the conductor would'nt had made comments after every song. My favorite song was "Oh Lois" since it had a lot of action during the song. Before the symphony I thought it was going to be a lot worse than it was.
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Fleming,

i guess i could say i liked the houston syphony i thought it was fun and boring ,it was fun how the composer taught us how to compose and showing us the instrument famiy , it was boring because of having to lisen to him talk and and play his instrument .I had 1 question not to be rude or anything what did the composer have on the back of his head ,was it a balled spot or a patch of hair missing, the syphony was alright
The symphony was sort of boring because I almost fell asleep! But it was only fun when the conductor told us about the music
Sincerely F#10

p.s What's YOUR comment on the symphony ????
Dear Mr.Fleming,
I thought that the Symphony was kind of boring beacause all you did was sit there and listen to music even though the seats were alot of money I didn't really like it. I saw the Symphoney when i was at my old School and i saw it and I didn't like it then either.
that was my comments.

The symphony was OK, I guess, but classics are not my favorite...
I loved the jiggly thing-a-mobob instrument! It was sweet!
I also liked the American in Paris song, it kept me busy enough.
What did YOU think????
PS: sorry to be,like, the fiftieth person to ask this, but what was that on the back of the conductors head???I wonder...

5th grade rox!!!

I did not like the symphony.I personally didn't like it because I never listen to classical music and I thought it was really boring. They could have kept my interest by playing instrumental versions of songs that I hear on the radio. I liked how the conductor told the story of the song before you heard it so it would make more sense. The only song I kind of liked was an "American in Paris."

Dear Mr Fleming,
The music was intresting and I liked to listen to it but it lasted a little too long for my attention span. The music's story I could not understand until the conducter explained it. The music to me kind of sounded the same so I didn't really have a favorite. I thought that he meant when he said the peices followed a story arc was that the pieces had rising action that brought you to a climax then a ending. The pieces also set a setting.

Dear Mr. Fleming,
The symphony was really awesome. The music was a lot like a story, and the music sounded different when we knew what the story was. You could hear the symphony very loud from where we sat. I enjoyed going to the Houston symphony. I have been to the Rice symphony but this was my first time to go to the Houston symphony.

Dear Mr.Fleming,
I think I really liked the symphony. Just like the one 4th graders and I did last year. My favorite piece was when they made all kinds of music insterments. What was your's? And my very important question during the symhony was, why did the conductor have a bold part on his head?
